RETREAT INFORMATION:
Three Workshops at Fall Retreat Working (Slightly) out of the Box Thursday – 9:30 am Mary Kay Winke Plan for a new way to cut and piece an older block design. You will start with 8" squares of fabric but end up with a larger finished block. Class members, who desire, will have an option to participate in a fabric exchange. A ballot at the September meeting will determine what fabrics will be exchanged (selection will include 30’s, red and blue, batiks, civil war, or primary brights). In the afternoon, students will be discussing design options on how the finished blocks could be arranged. If you have other blocks that you would like assistance with in a lay-out design, you are encouraged to bring them for the group to discuss. Supplies: Standard sewing supplies plus fabric as determined at September meeting. Garden Gems – Machine Appliqué and Embellishing Friday – 9:00 am Janet Pittman Janet, from West Des Moines, Iowa, is a designer, author, and award winning quilter with many quilts published in quilt magazines. In addition to individual quilt patterns, Janet authored the book Appliqué, the Basics and Beyond. An avid gardener, she takes inspiration from her own garden. In this workshop, we will be using one of the Garden Gems flowers as a pattern to explore machine appliqué using paper-backed fusible web and basic machine utility stitches to add embellishment to the design. A short course in hand beading will finish the day. Supplies: Standard sewing supplies and those listed on the Garden Gems Wall Hanging pattern. Fabric selection will be dependent upon which of the three flowers chosen. An appliqué or open-toe foot for your sewing machine can be helpful. A small kit with beading materials will be available for purchase for those wanting to try beading. The Garden Gems pattern ($8) is required for all those taking the workshop.
Quilts from Vintage Linens Saturday – 9:00 am Janice Mineart Do you have some older linens and embroidery pieces that are stained or that have holes? You will learn how you can re-purpose those items and turn them into charming quilts to treasure. In the morning you will focus on embroidered items that can be cut into 6" squares. Trading with friends is encouraged. Bring 1.5" strips of vintage or reproduction fabrics to frame the blocks. The second part of this workshop will focus on a quilt as you go method to make a block from vintage edging, laces, and doilies. View samples at the Guild meeting. Janice does have items you may purchase if you don’t have your own. Supplies: Standard sewing supplies. You will receive a supply list when you sign up for the workshop. |
